With only a month to go until the new year commences, it’s time to turn our attention to the impending interior trends of 2018. What’s set to inspire next year? What styles and colours will surge to the forefront? What trends will get left behind? Our interiors specialist Nicola has identified her top interior design predictions for 2018. Find out more today…

The design trends of 2018 will reflect the current mood of the world. Consumers are now looking to support one another and protect the environment, investing more love and attention within their communities. It’s time to embrace the frugal, the natural, the comfortable and the eco-friendly.

Back to nature

The Organics trend continues to evolve, and in 2018, it’ll reign supreme. Nature will permeate every area of our home, in the form of flowers, natural woods, faux furs and earthy tones. Complementing this is the frugal trend, as we embrace the handcrafted, the recycled and the artisanal, portraying a simpler way of life in our decor. We’ve become more aware of sustainability, and as our lives become increasingly hectic and focused on technology, we’ll have even more of a desire to reconnect with the natural world. Expect neutral, down-to-earth colours to reflect this, along with fabrics like linen, cotton and wood.

Greenery

Following on from this is Greenery, which is showing no sign of slowing down. The best thing about this trend is that it’s so easy to reflect in your home; plants are very affordable and easy to source, so anyone can inject a touch of Greenery into their home without breaking the bank. Get creative with your plants by popping in different coloured pots, baskets or buckets. Consider wall planters and hanging ivy for bringing Greenery to different aspects of the space. You can also incorporate the trend without using actual plants; botanical prints and shades of green can also be utilised in your soft furnishings, artwork and accessories.

Tonal reds

Bright red played a big part in 2017 design trends, but next year we can expect the shade to be pared back. Tones of red include terracotta, berry, brick and blush, which bring a more muted and sophisticated style to the table. Red is inherently energising, exciting our emotions and inspiring us to take action. By bringing this colour into your home, you can expect the space to feel much warmer and more positive. Expect a big use of block shades and line patterns, as well as interesting combinations of the same colour in various tones.

Cosiness

2018 will be all about warmth and cosiness. Consider comfy corners, dimly lit nooks and plenty of thick knit blankets. These dedicated cosy areas provide us with somewhere to relax and unwind, enjoying the comforts of home with family and friends. Welcome the cosy trend into the rest of your space by adding a few key touches; plush fabrics, mood lighting and candles will help to produce the right ambience, along with artisanal and nostalgic items that bring a unique sense of personality.

Greige

The stylish blend of grey and beige will be a real favourite throughout 2018. The beauty of greige is that it brings an element of warmth and coolness concurrently, pulling together a wide range of decor themes and complementing a vast amount of different colours and textures. Greige is the perfect blending tone for many palettes, including mineral blue, peacock blue, mustard and ochre. Soothing and subtle by nature, it is a great solution for toning down bolder shades. Expect greige to play a big role in interior design next year!

Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a comeback and it’s here to stay through 2018. We’re expecting to see a mix of nature-inspired patterns and geometric prints. No longer will wallpaper be limited to one statement wall, but we will begin to see it creeping further into our spaces for a bolder, busier effect. Mix up your colours and prints for more excitement in your space, and don’t be afraid to play with unusual combinations. While 2018 will a time of natural, earthy interiors, there’s still room to be bold and experimental.

Window dressings

In 2018, there’ll be much more focus on the texture and effect of fabrics. We should expect to see ombre effects in soft furnishings, with plenty of tactile fibres and metallic shimmers. Full-length, floor to ceiling curtains will be embraced, creating a slick, sleek look. Carefully considered curtain poles will also be utilised more, with people understanding the importance of this key window dressing feature. We should also anticipate the layering of different blinds and curtains, including sheer fabrics and shutters. While frugality plays an important role in the trends of 2018, homeowners will still be keen to invest more money in high quality, long lasting products, which is why bespoke wooden blinds, curtains and Roman blinds will be so popular.
