One colour that has stood out for its timeless elegance and versatile charm for decades is brown. Often overlooked in favour of bolder shades, brown brings warmth, sophistication, and a sense of comfort to any space. In this blog, we’ll delve into the various ways of incorporating brown into interior design, exploring its diverse shades, pairing possibilities, and the emotional depth it adds to a room.

Creating a warm and cosy atmosphere

Brown has an innate ability to evoke a sense of warmth and cosiness. In living rooms and bedrooms, rich brown tones in furniture, blinds, curtains and accessories can transform a space into a comfortable retreat. Consider incorporating plush brown sofas, textured blinds, soft cushions and area rugs to achieve a snug and inviting ambiance in any living space.

For more functional rooms where there’s water, consider adding faux wooden blinds in a natural wood colour to add this striking colour into the space.

Balancing act: brown with other colours

Lighter neutrals, such as beige and cream, enhance the understated elegance of brown, creating a harmonious and balanced look. For a more vibrant aesthetic, combine brown with jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, or deep burgundy. This creates a sophisticated colour palette that is both luxurious and inviting.

You can also mix different shades of brown together! Rich mahogany browns look lovely with latte tones which add depth and warmth to a room.

Textured fabrics with brown

The beauty of brown lies not only in its colour but also in the variety of textures it can encompass. From smooth leather and rich wood grains to plush velvets and coarser fabrics, brown is a great vehicle for bringing a tactile element to interior spaces. Mixing textures adds depth and visual interest, ensuring that a predominantly brown palette remains dynamic and engaging.

Incorporating brown into different spaces

Kitchen and Dining Areas:

  • Dark wooden blinds (faux wooden blinds for any windows above the sink) or a brown-toned backsplash can add warmth to a kitchen.
  • Brown dining furniture creates a cosy and intimate setting for family meals. These can be leather covered chairs or again look to lovely natural wooden shades.

Bedrooms:

  • Brown bedding, thick velvet curtains, and accent furniture lend a serene and tranquil feel.
  • Lighter shades of brown in bedrooms also create a sense of airiness. For lighter shades, consider shutters or even coffee shades for scatter cushions.

Living Rooms:

  • Brown leather sofas exude a classic and timeless appeal. These can be matched with brown fabric lamp shades and neutral cushions. At the windows, brown Roman blinds are a great starting point.
  • Accent walls or artwork in shades of brown provide a focal point without overwhelming the space. If you go for darker browns here, be sure to add pops of more vibrant colours like cream or jewel primary colours.

The versatility of brown in interior design

Ever since we started to build homes using wood some 10,000 years ago, brown has been a staple in countless residences. Whether it is the dark woods associated with the Regency era decor, or the chocolate browns of the 1970s, brown is back!

Brown, with its extensive range of shades from light tans to deep chocolates, offers a versatile foundation for interior design. Lighter shades of brown create an airy and open feel, while darker hues exude a cosy and intimate atmosphere. Neutral and earthy, brown pairs seamlessly with a wide spectrum of colours, making it a perfect choice for any design style, from traditional to contemporary.
