Spring is the season of baby lambs and blooming flowers, but it can also be the season of runny noses and watery eyes. As pollen fills the air, many of us are preparing for this year’s hay fever season. While unavoidable, it is possible to reduce the factors that cause hay fever. In this blog we’ll be showcasing some of the steps you can take to reduce the impact of hay fever so you can enjoy spring in peace.

Protection at home

Medicines and the right sunglasses will serve you well, but did you know you can take some easy steps at home to better protect you from hay fever?

These are three top tips for making your home a haven from allergens!

  • Keep the pollen out – perhaps the easiest way to avoid hay fever is to prevent pollen in your home to begin with. All Carnival hygienic roller blinds and vertical blinds feature a special Pollergen™ technology which denatures up to 50% of grass pollen when the two come into contact.
  • Clean as you go – you may think regular dusting is a good idea to remove pollen but it can simply stir it into the air. Damp-dusting will instead trap pollen in turn keeping you comfortable and happy.
  • Invest in an air purifier – an air purifier with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter will help to remove pollen, dust, and other allergens from the air. They’re particularly beneficial in bedrooms and living areas.

When out and about

Hay fever is thought to affect up to 25 per cent of the population, which is an astonishing number. With so many of us battling itchy eyes and sneezing at inopportune moments, what can be done to limit its impact on our lives?

Luckily there are a few easy steps you can take when out and about to avoid being suddenly overwhelmed. Some top tips are:

  • Shower and change – when there’s a lot of pollen, it can easily get stuck in your clothes, prolonging your exposure to it. A quick rinse in the shower and a fresh top can stop it from spreading indoors.
  • Prepare with antihistamines – tablets, nose sprays, and eye drops are all fabulous options for managing hay fever, but for best results, be sure to take them before you’re affected by symptoms.
  • Dress accordingly – wraparound sunglasses are a great buy for hay fever sufferers. By protecting your eyes from pollen, you can minimise itchy eyes. This is really helpful when driving!

While hay fever can’t be fully avoided, there are some easy steps you can take to reduce your exposure to pollen and its effects. With some specialist blinds, a medicine cupboard full of antihistamine and some funky shades, spring should be a season to enjoy in peace and comfort.
