If you’re decorating a nursery, you needn’t feel constrained by an all-white colour palette. While this crisp, neutral look remains a practical choice, there are plenty of opportunities to inject more colour, texture and personality into your little one’s special room.

In terms of colour, we’re currently seeing a mixture of fresh and muted tones trending for nurseries. These colours are all nature-inspired and very gender neutral – perfect if you’re expecting a surprise!

Consider shades of yellow, with brighter varieties creating a happy feeling, and darker mustards creating a more contemporary and easy-going look. Green shades are also being enjoyed, with a real focus on soft sage and fresh mint. Muted earthy tones of peach, coral and rust are proving a popular alternative to the typical baby pinks, whilst greys and warm whites provide a neutral and versatile base.

When it comes to prints, why not try a geometric design? This could be a traditional star print, or a modern pattern repeat of lines and shapes. Leafy shapes are also a timeless design, perfect for a gender neutral space whilst also ageing well with your little one. Other classic choices include polkadots, florals and animals, all of which can be modernised and stylised. Try, for example, a monochrome flowered print with pops of colour (think Orla Kiely or Sonova Studio), or an abstract pattern repeat of woodland creatures, unicorns or alpacas for a more trendy take on animal designs.

For accessories, we’ve seen a real rise in woven pieces, including wicker baskets, jute rugs and rattan accessories. Tassels are also a lovely way to add detail. Your baby accessories needn’t be brash against your subtle and sophisticated decor; instead, look for bunting, mobiles and wall hangings in soft tones, creating playfulness in a more understated way. One type of piece that works beautifully is a handcrafted rainbow accessory in muted tones, whether it’s crocheted, woven or crafted from wood. A great way to display your accessories is with individual floating shelves, perfect for showcasing prints, toys and nicknacks.

The goal of your nursery is to be balanced and harmonious, creating a soft mood that’s conducive to rest and relaxation, whilst also bringing an element of fun and style for your little one (and you!)

The best blinds for nurseries

It goes without saying that nursery window dressings should be child safe, complete with child safety devices which keep cords and chains tidied away. You should also avoid placing furniture directly below or beside a window dressing. Once safety has been addressed, it’s time to think about the other practicalities – durability, light control and easy cleaning!

Roller blinds

Easy wipe roller blinds are a great solution, perfect for protecting against grubby fingers and little accidents. These wipe-clean blinds only require a quick wipe with a damp cloth to remove any stains or stickiness. A standard roller blind is also a good choice, although it’s worth considering the fabric type in terms of durability and dimout/blackout qualities.

Our roller binds are available in a wide choice of colours and prints, so you can select the perfect style for you little one’s little haven. We’ve handpicked some of our favourites below – be sure to take a look.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds are also great option for your nursery, providing a more warm and comfortable feeling. Roman blinds boast a sophisticated design which is perfect for complementing a more stylish nursery space. A great alternative to curtains, they hang and stack neatly, which is ideal for small rooms or small windows. At Blinds Direct, we have a great selection of Romans that are ideal for a baby’s room, including plain and patterned designs. All come complete with a sturdy headrail, effective lining (such as a blackout and thermal for a better night’s sleep) and easy-to-use controls, making for a strong and durable window dressing that will stand the test of time. Discover some of our favourites below.

Curtains

Or how about curtains? This classic option offers extra warmth and cosiness, as well as being entirely child friendly – curtains don’t require cords or chains, after all. Our made to measure curtains are available with blackout and thermal lining, ensuring your little one’s comfort as well as being more energy efficient. We offer a wide range of colours and patterns, available in your specific window size for a seamless fit and maximum functionality.

And don’t forget, you can complete the look of your child’s room with coordinating accessories, including handmade cushions and lamp shades.
