Since the 1930s, mid-century style has been revised, refined and repurposed to integrate into the trends of the moment.

Its versatility and timeless nature make mid-century style a mainstay in the world of interior design, from its simple forms and clean lines, to its mixed materials and statement geometric patterns.

It’s these geometrics that we’re exploring today. Offering plenty of visual interest with contrasting shapes and colours, mid-century geometric designs have a unique ability to find simplicity in complexity, making complicated concepts into basic yet effective forms.

Modern mid-century patterns reflect that special era; that period of 30 or so years where, following the end of the war, fashion, music and technology were constantly evolving. Orla Kiely’s designs are particularly noteworthy, bringing a feeling of retro nostalgia through the iconic petal and stem designs. But it’s not only Orla Kiely’s mid-century geometrics that draw inspiration from the great outdoors. We can see nature reflecting through many different geo prints, whether it’s flowers, leaves, mountains or stars.

Colours that play a big role in the trend are warm mustard, regal purple, tomato red and earthy olive, along with muted neutral shades of beige, grey and duck egg. Black and white are also utilised for highlights and contrast.

When you bring mid-century geometrics into your home, consider continuing the theme by contrasting natural materials with thee man-made, such as wood and leather mixed with plastic and metal. You could also introduce the furniture styles that are reflective of the mid-century, such as curved dining chairs, funky sideboards and glass coffee tabes. Mid-century style mixes very well with modern trends, so don’t be afraid to team your mid-century geometrics with other contemporary looks.
