Rustic interiors are a timeless choice for your home. Combining the old and the new, this style works well in any space. It is relaxed and pared back, offering a cosy and comfortable yet ultra stylish look. Find out more about rustic interiors…

What are rustic interiors?

The defining characteristic of rustic interiors is the use of organic materials. The goal is to create a space that looks and feels as natural as possible, with a raw, earthiness about it. Rustic interiors use mixed natural fibres alongside solid materials, such as wood, stone and simple metals. The woods have an ‘unfinished’ look; any natural wood works, but it’s a good idea to steer clear of glossy finishes. Consider a subtle sheen or a matt finish instead. Painted woods also work well, particularly in the form of wooden blinds and wooden curtain poles.

How to get the rustic look

You can achieve the rustic look by using natural stone and wood for flooring, as well as using wooden accents in furniture, like side tables, coffee tables and shelving. For your soft furnishings, mix together cushions in similar fabrics (ideally cottons and linens). You can also use rugs and throws to soften the overall look. For your accessories, add in wicker and rattan pieces. These work well for lighting, baskets or seating.

One thing worth noting is that rustic interiors have an imperfect roughness about them. Don’t strive for perfection in terms of layout or balance; one of the most appealing parts of the rustic look is its ‘undone’ look. A great way to achieve this is with reclaimed woods or raw fabrics.

In terms of colours, rustic interiors stick to earthy tones and soft neutrals paired with deep charcoals and inky shades. Some of our favourite tones for rustic spaces include soft sage, pebble grey and warm brown. For more warmth, consider terracotta or mustard, and for more vibrance, try ocean blue or leafy green.

The rustic look is ideal for living rooms but it can be easily adapted for bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. The key is to keep it simple, natural fabrics and finishes. Here’s some inspiration for a rustic home, and be sure to take a look at the pieces from Blinds Direct which are ideal for rustic interiors.
