Vertical blinds are stylish, elegant and most importantly functional. Their impressive length enhances any room, however their sheer size can cause customers to worry about maintenance and cleaning. If you’re stumped about how to clean your vertical blinds, don’t be. In this guide, we’ll walk you through step-by-step instructions on how to clean your vertical blinds, whether you remove them or not.

What are Vertical Blinds?

Vertical blinds provide outstanding privacy and light control. The louvre arrangement allows views from both directions to be obscured and sunlight controlled to a precise degree. They are ideal for rooms that might be overlooked, or where you require additional privacy.

A versatile window addition, vertical blinds can be made to fit windows of any size, including large expanses of glass such as bi-folding, sliding and crittall style doors.

Why cleaning your vertical blinds matters

Over time, dust, dirt, and even mould can build up on blinds, especially if they’re in high-traffic areas or near kitchens. As a result, regular cleaning not only keeps your blinds looking fresh but also extends their lifespan and ensures smooth operation.

How often should you clean vertical blinds?

  • Regular Maintenance: Light dusting every 1-2 weeks
  • Spot Cleaning: As needed when stains appear
  • Deep Cleaning: Every 3-6 months (or annually with regular maintenance)
  • High-Traffic Areas: Clean more frequently due to increased dirt buildup

How to clean vertical blinds

While they may look tricky to maintain, vertical blinds require very little maintenance due to their long, downwards-hanging louvres. Consequently, they are less likely to collect dust, as there’s little surface area to settle on. Most vertical blinds are constructed from flexible polyester, or a similar material, which makes them easily wipe-clean with a fresh, damp cloth.

How to wash vertical blinds step by step

You don’t need much to wash vertical blinds. A few essentials include:

  • Microfibre cloths
  • Soft sponge
  • Mild soap or laundry detergent
  • Vacuum cleaner with brush attachment
  • Towels
  • Bucket or bathtub

Step 1: Remove Blinds from Headrail

  1. Gently unclip each louvre from the headrail brackets
  2. Lay blinds flat on a clean surface
  3. Clean the headrail with a damp cloth and spray silicone into the mechanism to keep it running smoothly. Alternatively, you could also use baby wipes.

Step 2: Pre-Clean Dusting

  1. Use vacuum with brush attachment on both sides
  2. Work from top to bottom in vertical strokes
  3. Remove loose dust before washing

Step 3. Wash With Soap and Warm Water

  1. Fill bathtub with warm water (maximum 30°C/86°F)
  2. Add mild laundry detergent
  3. Submerge blinds for maximum 10 minutes
  4. Gently agitate to remove dirt
  5. Avoid scrubbing too vigorously

Top tip: Don’t soak blinds for too long, as this may affect their fabric finish or fire-retardant coating.

Step 4: Dry Properly

  • Always lay blinds flat on a towel to dry naturally.
  • Never hang them while wet (water can pool at the bottom).
  • Avoid tumble dryers and direct heat.

You should always dry your vertical blinds naturally to maintain their shape, size and colour. If your louvres have been thoroughly saturated in the cleaning process, do not hang them to dry, as this will cause the water to settle at the bottom of the fabric. Instead, lay each louvre down on a clean flat surface and allow them to dry naturally before rehanging.

Step 5:

Once fully dry, reattach the louvres to the headrail.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using hot water – Can shrink fabric and melt adhesives
  • Over-soaking – Can cause shrinkage and damage
  • Hanging wet blinds – Causes stretching and water marks
  • Using bleach – Can damage fabric and cause discoloration
  • Forgetting to test cleaners – Always test in hidden area first
  • Rushing the drying process – Patience prevents permanent damage

How to clean vertical blinds without removing them

Sometimes removing blinds isn’t practical. Here are quick cleaning options:

  • Vacuum regularly with a brush attachment.
  • Spot clean stains using a damp cloth dipped in mild soap solution.
  • Compressed air can help dislodge dirt from tricky corners.
  • Dusting sprays (test on a hidden area first) can keep them fresh.

Top 5 expert tips

  1. Remember they’re easier to clean than they look – The vertical design naturally sheds dust
  2. Always work from top to bottom – Prevents re-contaminating cleaned areas
  3. Always dry naturally – Heat can damage fabric and adhesives
  4. Don’t forget the headrail – Often the dirtiest part of the system
  5. Try baby wipes – Perfect for quick spot cleaning and maintenance
