The Mediterranean world is well known for happy people, glorious weather, and some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world. As a result, it’s hardly surprising that millions of people visit every year to unwind and enjoy the cultures that have developed there. With thousands of years of civilisation developing around it, the Mediterranean is a fantastic source of inspiration for your interior design. Here are but a few of our top tips for doing so!

Add Mediterranean style to your interior design

The Mediterranean is home to multiple nations, different peoples, and cultures and as a result there is no singular Mediterranean style, but there are some excellent themes, colour combinations and patterns you can explore and add into your home to add a chic, cool style! Let’s dive right in…

Go Greek

Greece is the birthplace of things we enjoy and take for granted every day, from comedy to democracy. But it’s also home to many great decor styles. One of the best known is the use of blue and white – and it’s beautiful.

Whether it’s the iconic blue and white tiles, bright blue walls and domes, or the nation’s flag, blue and white can be found in many places around the Greek peninsula and islands. What’s more, blue and white is a perfect theme for any room in the home.

Blue and white geometric print window furnishings are a great way for reimagining Greek tiles in interior design, as they provide the pattern and detailing of real tiles, without the hard finish. For a less literal take, you could always add blue blinds, curtains and blue lamp shades to a white room for a very chic, Greek finish.

Italian inspiration

No word conjures up the same idea of style and elegance as “Italian”. Home to some of the finest clothes, cars and artists the world has ever seen, Italy is a treasure trove of inspiration for interior design.

One of the cornerstones of Italian style is its simplicity and elegance. There is often a no fuss approach to clothing and this nonchalance translates into very stylish home decor inspiration.

Quite often, you’ll see Italian people stick to a limited neutral colour palette, and from a neutral foundation you can start to introduce colours ranging from rich jewel tones to terracotta – a colour not found in many schools of design but intrinsically Italian. A perfect way to incorporate these colours in this trend is through lamp shades, home accessories and window dressings.

Spanish style

Spanish design can suit both modern interiors and traditional decor. Introducing a twist of classical grandeur and colour into your space will add elegance and splendour without compromising on homeliness.

Three items to ponder here are lamps, cushions, and curtains!  For a more modern Spanish variation, you want to maintain the theme of cosiness and warmth but substitute the traditional colour palette for cooler, more modern tones.

Here, brilliant whites and dark greys are great options. In this more modern theme, consider floral patterns but also look at geometric arrangements as well. Wooden Venetian blinds which retain their natural charm are perfect for Spanish themed spaces while painted alternatives in greys and warm tones of cream are excellent for more modern alternatives.

Egyptian elegance

From the northern side of the Mediterranean to the southeast corner, Egypt also presents a host of interior inspiration!

Natural shades of pale cream with pops of terracotta will help you keep cool while adding the influence of Egypt to your space. For little nods to the fantastic country’s archaic past, use gold tones sparingly to add ancient sophistication to your decor. While gold will add to the Mediterranean good vibes of your home, you can also add shades of lapis lazuli.

These shades of blue are a little more saturated than those looked at earlier, adding a little bit of a warmer edge to the space. Voiles curtains can also be used to add a fashionable, North African finish while also letting fresh air circulate around your home without compromising on privacy.

Adding Mediterranean vibes to your decor will help you find the peace of one of the most beautiful parts of the planet. By following these easy steps, you can relax in style and bask in the glow of your home’s beauty!
