For the past few years, we’ve been watching shades of brown grow in popularity and used to fabulous effect. In 2025, this trend toward the earthier tones is set to continue but with a little twist to keep it fresh! The Amped Up Earth Tones trend offers a dynamic palette brimming with cosy, inviting potential. In this blog we’ll be showcasing our favourite amped up earth tones, and providing some top tips for how to use them.

What are amped up earth tones?

Amped up earth tones refer to the evolution of the warm neutrals and browns we’ve seen in recent years alongside pops of dark primary colour. Including shades of cosy terracotta, rich browns, stone greys and greyish greens, this colour palette can be used to great effect and enjoyed in modern and classical spaces alike.

Warm greys

Greys are often seen as being cool shades, but there are plenty of warm grey shades that are ideal for a cosy space. Amped up shades of grey include mushroom, slate and even anthracite, each of which will enrich your decor.

  • You can also use warm shades of grey as part of a pattern, especially when used alongside lighter, neutral shades.
  • Use light grey on larger surfaces. Similar to terracotta shades, you can use warm greys to create a pleasant backdrop from which to add other more eye-catching colours
  • Use dark greys as accessories. Dark greys – especially those that are almost black – are best employed via cushions, lamp shades and picture frames to add dimensionality to the room.

Soothing terracottas

Terracotta is a beautiful colour that’s enjoyed around the globe. Warming, convivial and relaxing, terracotta is a shade that’s ideal for living spaces and bedrooms. These are our top tips for adding terracotta to your amped up earth inspired space:

  • Layering a window is one of the best ways to add depth and when you use rich textured fabrics, you get all the style benefits. Consider a terracotta Roman blind in a window recess paired with an earthy curtain.
  • Be brave and use terracotta shades on large surfaces. Walls, curtains and throws are all excellent ways of introducing this colour.
  • Be braver still and consider terracotta as your foundational colour in a colour drenched space. You can use other amped up earth tones to add pops of visual interest.

Sophisticated browns

Brown is a very important colour to introduce into a space decorated in this theme. Brown is well known as a comforting colour, but it’s also excellent for adding an organic energy to a room. Browns can be added using soft fabrics, quality paints or even natural wood.

  • Finding the right shades of brown is crucial but remember to keep them earthy. Clay tones and shades of chestnut and oak will add a warm finish to any room.
  • Consider adding real wood furnishings for a natural edge. Tables, chairs, wooden blinds and shutters are all excellent options for adding brown to your design.
  • Be at the cutting edge of interior design by adding shades of Mocha Mousse, Pantone’s colour of the year for 2025.

Mix in some primary colours

The three colour families we’ve looked at have all been on the neutral side of the spectrum, but with amped up colour palettes, there is definitely room for adding in some spot colours with a different energy.  Some of the best colours to add are:

  • Partnering beautifully with all the colours we’ve explored in burgundy. As many tones are on the warmer side of things, deep, rich reds are a bold, exciting choice.
  • Siennas and ochre add a bit of brightness to the room. What’s more, they’re excellent for adding a contemporary look to the room. Cushions and lamp shades in these colours are ideal.
  • Navy blue is a dynamic amped up colour. The shades can be used as great points of contrast for your other browner colours and are perfect when used as part of a beautiful pattern.

Amped up colours are diverse, exciting and perfect for any home. By incorporating these colours into your home you can transform your home into a cosy oasis.
