The festive season is upon us, and what better way to embrace the festive spirit than by transforming that small, neglected box room into a cosy Christmas bedroom retreat? Whether you’re preparing for guests or just want to create a special space for finding a quiet moment, this guide will help you turn even the tiniest room into a warm and inviting haven for the festive season.

Why refresh your box room this Christmas?

Box rooms are handy spaces for keeping out of season clothes, old odds and ends and even as makeshift work spaces. That said, with Christmas on the horizon, box rooms can easily be refreshed to be lovely little bedrooms for friends or family visiting. These same spaces can also be made into sanctuaries of calm where you can escape from the Christmas chaos and find a bit of peace for 20 minutes or so! These are our seven steps for updating your box room at Christmas.

Step 1: Declutter and Organise

Before you begin the transformation of your box room, start by decluttering the space. Remove any unnecessary items and find creative storage solutions to maximise the space. Consider investing in under-bed storage containers and wall-mounted shelves to keep the floor clear and open up the room. Don’t forget, you can replace any old bits that have to go in the boxing day sales!

Step 2: Festive Colour Palette

Set the tone for the holidays by choosing a festive colour palette. Traditional reds and greens, combined with cosy neutrals like whites and browns, can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Add pops of metallic accents, such as gold or silver, to enhance the festive feel. You can achieve this with comfy new cushions, some new curtains or a lovely thermal lined Roman blind to keep the cold out.

Step 3: Deck the Walls

Decorate the walls with Christmas-themed artwork, wall decals, or twinkling fairy lights. You can create a DIY holiday gallery wall with festive prints or display cherished holiday cards from loved ones. Consider using removable wall decals to add seasonal charm without the long term commitment. A bit of tinsel will also go a long way, or some festive bunting.

Step 4: Cosy Bedding and Textiles

If your revamped box room is to host a guest his Christmas, you can enjoy some easy wins. Invest in soft and cosy bedding to make the room inviting and comfortable. Choose holiday-themed duvet covers, blankets, and cushions to add festive flair. Faux fur or knitted blankets can add a touch of warmth, creating a snug space for guests to unwind as can thermal blinds and curtains.

Step 5: Luxury Lights

No Christmas bedroom is complete without twinkling lights. String fairy lights around the room, drape them over the headboard, or hang them on the walls to create a magical ambiance. Choose warm white or multicoloured lights for a cosy and festive feel. Quality velvet lamp shades with glittering metallic linings will also add a delicate touch of sophistication to your smaller spaces.

Step 6: DIY Christmas Tree

If space is limited, consider a tabletop or windowsill Christmas tree. You can also get creative and craft your own tree using string lights, ornaments, or even a decorative ladder adorned with festive decorations. This adds a festive focal point without taking up too much space.

Step 7: Personal Touches

Don’t forget that it’s important to add touches of personality into every relaxation space. Therefore, incorporate personal touches to make the room feel special. Display family photos, hang stockings, or create a DIY holiday wreath to add a personalised festive touch. Consider adding a small table or dresser with holiday-scented candles or essential oil diffusers for an extra dose of festive cheer.

Transforming a box room into a cosy Christmas bedroom is a delightful and easy way to celebrate the season. With a bit of creativity and thoughtful decor choices, you can turn even the smallest space into a warm and inviting retreat for yourself or your guests. Embrace the festive spirit, and let the magic of Christmas fill every corner of your newly transformed box room.
