You might know that coral is Pantone’s chosen colour of 2019. Now that the summer season has well and truly arrived, it’s the perfect time to experiment with this family of shades for a stylish and on-trend look throughout every room in your home…

Coral is a comfortable and optimistic colour. Its healthy dose of orangey-red makes this pinkish tone more androgynous, and therefore more flexible to use throughout the home.

Coral is an effective contrast colour that can be teamed with a variety of colour palettes. For instance, it works beautifully with grey and olive, bringing a feeling of zest and excitement to an otherwise dark or neutral space.

Coral also teams well with other tropical shades like pink and yellow, as well as understated ‘sandy’ shades of nude, beige and camel. Both of these palettes nod towards a tropical island feeling in vivacious and subtle ways, respectively. Blues, particularly greens-blues, are another good choice for layering beside coral; these tones sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, and are therefore a perfect match.

This playful shade works well on a large scale, such as a feature wall, statement sofa or a supersized print on curtains and cushions. But at the same time, it can be utilised in smaller and simpler ways, such as a coral-coloured throw for the sofa, a decorative coral figure upon your mantelpiece, or a pale coral blind for your window. Just one touch of coral will go far, which makes it a reliable and effective accent colour.

This warm peachy shade has golden undertones, which tone beautifully against other warm metallic touches. If you decide to opt for coral curtains, consider a brushed gold curtain pole and holdbacks to highlight the colour. Black and dark tones also work well with brighter, redder shades of coral, while natural woods are a good option for softer, pinker varieties.

Because coral works so well upon muted tones, it’s an excellent option for scatter cushions on your family sofa or in the bedroom. Consider plain coral-coloured cushions in interesting weaves, or be more experimental with coral-inspired patterns. Other good options for bringing coral into your home is through lamp shades, glass ware and decorative dishes. You could also consider a coral plant pot – this colour tones brilliantly against vibrant greenery.

No matter how you choose to incorporate coral accents into your space, this appealing and welcoming colour is guaranteed to inspire. Take a look at some of our top picks…
