Christmas is almost here. The sleigh bells are jingling, stocking fillers are being picked and decorations are going up. This is a magical time of year and with the cold banging on our doors, we’re spending more time inside so it’s important we make our homes the perfect Christmas environment. In today’s blog, we’ll be giving you some of our top hints and tips to capture the magic of Christmas in your décor.

Creating the perfect Christmas décor

Let’s face it, very few of us are going to remodel our homes every festive season, but its easy to make some year-round interior design changes that look stylish in the summer, but then act as a fantastic canvas for Christmas.

By this, we mean by using certain elements of interior design, you can make your home stylish, comfy and inviting, then once you know the elves are starting to wrap the presents, transform your space into a winter wonderland.

These steps revolve mostly around pattern and Christmas colours but trust me, we’re not just going to suggest using red, there are far more possibilities than you may have considered!

Christmas shades in the home

Red is a must

We have to address red. Red is synonymous with Christmas and having accent red items in your décor will certainly help to enrich the festive feeling come December 25. Red velvet cushions, curtains and even lampshades will look elegant and sophisticated, the year round but be cautious. Santa figures, Rudolph’s nose and lots of baubles will add a lot of red to your Christmas décor so make sure to not overdo it.

A pastel palette

Boost the nostalgia of Christmas by adding your decorations to a pastel palette, creating a space that’s perfect for young and old to enjoy equally. Dusky shades of pink walls and pink Roman blinds will create a feeling of whimsy and fun which perfectly represents the seasonal spirit.

Shades of inky blue

For a more traditional feel, look to shades of inky dark blue. While blue may not be a colour normally synonymous with Christmas, it does provide a fantastic contrasting colour for more festive colours including golds and reds. Indigo curtains are a great way to add smooth sophistication to a space throughout the year, and then help Christmas colours pop when the time comes. To learn more, checkout our Dark Blue blog.

Different types of green

Finally, consider using green. Shades of green are the perfect colours for contrasting with classic Christmas colours. Pale, natural shades of green – including olive, eucalyptus, and sage – will provide a distinction to the temporary shades of red and gold which tend to be rich, saturated tones. Think about fitting green curtains and cushions in close proximity to where your Christmas tree will live and enjoy the charming and sophisticated effect

Christmas patterns in interior design

As we’ve already stated, Christmas is a nostalgic time rooted in some of the darkest, coldest weeks of the year. Using patterns that fit within a classical décor is the perfect way to enrich your home during the festive season, and few patterns are as fitting as plaids, checks and tartans.

Checks and tartans

These designs make us feel warm, welcome, and comfortable – the perfect emotions for the season of goodwill. Adding checked curtains, Roman blinds, and cushions in a traditional check will add timeless style to a space, but then really bring your Christmas décor to life.

Lampshades and cushions

Quality lamp shades and cushions are excellent presents for welcoming in the New Year. While the stocking may not be large enough to accommodate such items, you can rest assured that your loved ones will think of you every time they get comfy on the sofa after a long day, or switch on their lights to enjoy themselves.

Consider gifting your loved ones a handmade cushion or lamp shade in a quality fabric as a thank you for all the exciting Christmas gifts you may have received – they’re sure to be delighted with them!
