Colour of the year 2021

For more than two decades, the fine folks at Pantone have unveiled their official Colour of the Year, and 2021’s has been announced. 2021’s joint colours of the year are PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.

So why did Pantone decide this vibrant yellow and robust grey deserve such a coveted title? Well, according to the organisation, the philosophy that underpinned the choice is “a marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”

This partnership is intended to demonstrate fortitude and optimism; strength and positivity – and its clear to see why these emotions were so inspirational following the stress and strains of 2020.

The union of an enduring Ultimate Grey with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.

PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating

Illuminating is a striking and dynamic tone of yellow. Described by Pantone as “a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power”, this tone will contribute well to an energetic space, especially alongside its grey counterpart.

Other tones of yellow may seem daunting at first, but they can enhance a range of décors. To fit this colour into your home, consider pairing it with other natural tones including whites, creams and of course greys.

Because yellow is potent, it will contrast well with these colours and add energy to elegance in any space – particularly living or dining rooms. You can read more about the colour yellow in general, and how best to use it in your home in our blog for yellow being our colour of the month.
