This week (July 1st – 7th) is clean beaches week so to celebrate, we’re going to look at cool coastal interior design and provide you with some top tips for adding a chic coastal edge to your home. In addition, we’ll be looking at some easy steps you can take at home to help keep the coast clean and safe for holidaymakers and seaside animals alike.

How to make a cool coastal space

There are a few steps you can take to enjoy a cool coastal space in your home whether it looks out at the sea or is in the centre of the country. To make sure you’re enjoying a cool finish, it’s wise to make sure there are plenty of brighter tones in the room so think of light shades and use chic white when looking for an accent colour.

Cool coastal colours

The most obvious colour to consider for cool coastal design is blue. While obvious, it doesn’t mean we should be casual about blue. Looking at the sea is a great way to unwind and lose yourself in its infinite splendour and by capturing the shades found beyond the beach you will find even greater peace at home.

Coastal blues

Around the UK, the shades of coastal blue are wide ranging from calming dark grey blues found in the north, to the energising green blues found in Cornwall. This diversity opens a range of great blues to add to your cool coastal home.

Seaside shades

Mixing blue shades with other tones found around the seaside is another surefire way to make your home perfectly stylish. Sandy shades of yellow, the green found atop the cliffs and the greys off the stones are perfect accompaniments to any shade of blue. When used as supporting colours, these colours will combine to make a comfortable cool coastal home!

Remember, the world is your oyster so take the time to find the right shades for you and your home, and you’ll be channelling that coastal calm in no time!

Coastal patterns

For centuries, the seaside has inspired a fantastic array of fabrics. Let’s start with stripes.

Stripes

Reminiscent of deck chairs, sticks of rock and windbreakers, stripes are a great way to add a touch of cool coastal to any room. One of the best ways to do so is via the soft furnishings you add to your decor. Striped Roman blinds, striped cushions, and lamp shades with stripes are fun and functional ways of adding seaside stripes into your interior design.

Shell shapes

Beyond stripes, you can bring shell shapes into the home to create a delicate, yet noteworthy aesthetic while implementing shapes and colours. Shells can even curate a feeling of the 1920s and an art deco finish. You can also find plenty of fish inspired patterns in our specially curated shallows collection!

Help keep the seas clean

So much of today’s day-to-day life features plastic.

Around the world, we use over 500 billion plastic bottles every year, and less than half of that is recycled or reused. Much of what’s left ends up in the sea which causes great damage to the environment and the living creatures that inhabit it.

Recycled fabrics

There is good news, however. Plastic bottles are being recycled more and more and innovative solutions are being created using the material. Take for instance our range of high-quality products created with recycled fabrics. The polyester used to make many of our recycled Roman blinds, eco-friendly curtains and lamp shades is made from recycled plastic bottles which stops them from ending up causing havoc in the ocean. Look out for the eco-friendly icon for relevant products. What’s more, there is no difference in the beauty or quality of any item made from recycled materials. They are a win-win!

Furthermore, 80% of the packaging we use when preparing our products for despatch is made from recycled materials. This further limits the impact of your new item on the environment.
